VINTAGE
2011 was a very different year on Waiheke with good flowering, excellent fruit set, followed by cooler and wetter weather than average leading up to harvest in April. By intensive canopy management and fruit reduction (‘green harvest’) we obtained excellent fruit, albeit in small volumes.
VITICULTURE
The seven-year old vines were intensively canopy managed with bud rubbing, shoot thinning, shoot positioning, hand trimming and green harvest to achieve a maximum of 6-8 bunches per vine..
VINIFICATION
The grapes were hand-picked in the cool of the morning, sorted in the field, chilled and destemmed soon after harvesting. Fermentation was in small (900 and 1500L) batches in modern equivalents of terracotta amphora. The wine was bottled without fining or filtration and cellar aged for 9 years before release.
